About Me

Technical by trade, Vermonter by heart, and family-focused above all else.

Dan Devins

Backstory

I grew up on the Vermont side of the Upper Valley. I have lived in the Burlington, VT area since graduating college. I got married in 2022 and have two cats. My wife and I recently welcome the birth of our first child.

To me, family is everything, I'm a proud uncle to four nieces and nephews, I'm the commissioner of our families fantasy football league, and I'm always looking forward to our annual family reunion.

I grew up playing sports (hockey, baseball, soccer, XC), building things with Legos, and playing video games. Now, I ski and golf, play softball and occasionally get out on the ice. I've graduated to building more practical things, and I still play video games with my friends.

My favorite food to make is Pizza, with chili a close second. I'm always looking for new recipes and techniques. Being a chef could have been a career path in an alternate timeline.

This year I'm trying to get outside more. Maybe do some fishing or hiking. Probably just end up sitting on brewery patios with my friends, Vermont's a pretty good place for that kind of thing.

Living an Interesting Life

In my professional life, I specialize in the architecture of technical support and operations—figuring out how to analyze a process, troubleshoot failures, and implement small, compounding improvements to make users’ lives easier.

But the dedication to intentionality, small improvements, and tinkering isn't reserved for tickets and systems. My philosophy is simple: Life is better when there are things to do outside of work, even when those things take time and dedication. I don't want to spend my life outside of work doing nothing but sitting in front of the television or my phone. The following interests are where I channel my creativity, find community, and practice the art of continuous, non-technical growth.

Primary Interests

Writing

This is the medium that I communicate best through. It allows me to slow down and organize my thoughts. I'm a natural poet but I love learning and doing all forms.

Cooking

This is my truest hobby. I love challenging myself to make delicious food. I also love making things for others.

Sports

I have grown up playing and watching baseball (Red Sox), Hockey (Bruins), and Soccer (Gotham FC). I love to golf in the summer and ski in the winter. I'm the biggest fan of the New England Patriots.

Photography

This is art. I challenge myself to take the best photographs that I can. I still have so much to learn.

Reading

I love to listen to and read books for entertainment and for learning. For fiction I like Sci-fi and Fantasy. For non-fiction I read whatever I am actively learning about.

DIY

I am getting more into this as I get older. I want to be handy around the house and I'm sure I'll have plenty to build for my kids. Making things with my hands feels really good.

Games

Board games and video games have been a great part of my life. I use them as ways to turn off when I need and to connect with family and friends. Cribbage is my go to.

History

Learning about the past has always been something I have enjoyed. My favorite topics are American history and World War 2.

Philosophy

Thinking deeply about the world is an action that resonates with me. I have a longing to understand things and to understand myself.

Personal Development

Building good habits and striving for something more is a noble act. As I grow up I want to evolve and improve.

Business Development

How businesses are built and operated is fascinating to me.

Design

How people use technology and tools is directly related to how they are designed. At work, I want the things that I create to be as useful as possible; to do this I need to pursue good design.

Media Production

I did this in college and have kept up with everything since. The gearhead in me gets to nerd out. I'm fairly close to having a fully functional mobile studio.
